Water Sense

MMSD works very hard to keep our lakes and rivers clean. By teaming up with local municipalities, we help by putting stormwater management practices to work for them. Take a look at just a few of our MANY projects we've worked on that help reduce water pollution and flooding.

Bradford Beach parking lot rain garden

On the west side of Lincoln Memorial Drive, across from Bradford Beach, MMSD worked in conjuction with Milwaukee County to put together a stormwater management project that will greatly reduce the polluted runoff that could eventually reach Lake Michigan. A rain garden was added as a buffer strip between the lot and the sidewalk which acts as a sponge for polluted water during wet weather.

Bradford Beach Bioswale
Located next to the Bradford Beach building, this bioswale takes excess water from the parking lot rain garden and distibutes it here. Native plants soak up impurities before they have the chance to run down the beach and into the lake. Below is a short animation of how a typical bioswale works. This isn't an exact replication of the Bradford Beach bioswale - just an educational device to show how these practices work during wet weather.
