School Event Highlights

Congratulations to all of the winners who entered the Fix a Leak Week (FALW)* Art and Essay Competition. The 10 talented winners attend Hayes Bilingual Elementary School (2), Milwaukee Sign Language School (4), and Hawley Environmental School (4).

The FALW* water sleuths have struck again too!  27 classes, 650 students, have completed their detective work for 2012.  With just 11 of the participating classes reporting, here's what the Leak Detectives found:

  • 42 leaking toilets!  A leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water per day! That's 3,066,000 gallons of water loss each year!
  • An estimate 3,039 drips per minute were found to be leaking from several faucets, shower heads, and other household pipes!  That amounts to 159,340 gallons of water loss each year!
*FALW consists of a set of 4 interactive lesson plans that engages students and their families into becoming water leak detectives in their homes.  This set of lesson plans require students in grades 3 to 5 to collect, analyze, and report water leaks while they learn more about water conservation.  FALW is developed by the Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense® Program. It occurs annually in March.  MMSD collaborates with Discovery World and Milwaukee Water Works to enhance the lessons plans and to offer optional essay and art poster contests so that students can shoo off what they learned.
